Text on a thumbnail is read in a fraction of a second, at a size smaller than a postage stamp. That rules out most “pretty” fonts. What you need is a typeface that stays clear when it’s tiny.

What makes a font work on a thumbnail

  • Thick strokes. Thin lines vanish at 320 pixels wide.
  • Simple shapes. Letters you recognise instantly, without decorative curls.
  • Tight but not cramped spacing. Letters shouldn’t touch once you add an outline.
  • Full character support if you make videos in more than one language.

Free fonts that hold up at small sizes

These are all on Google Fonts and free for commercial use:

FontStyleGood for
AntonTall, condensed, very boldShort, punchy words
Bebas NeueCondensed capitalsClean, modern look
Montserrat (Black / ExtraBold)Wide geometricTutorials, tech
Poppins (Bold / Black)Friendly geometricLifestyle, education
Oswald (Bold)CondensedFitting more letters in a small space
Archivo BlackHeavy and wideStrong single words

Pick one for headlines and stick with it. A second font is rarely needed on a thumbnail.

How big should the text be?

A useful rule on a 1280 × 720 canvas: each letter should be at least about 100 pixels tall, and the text block should take up a meaningful part of the frame. Then zoom out to 25% — roughly what a phone shows. If you have to squint, it’s too small or too long.

Making words stand out

  1. Outline or stroke. A dark outline around light text (or the reverse) separates it from any background.
  2. Solid shape behind the text. A coloured box or banner is the most reliable way to keep text readable on a busy photo.
  3. Drop shadow. A soft, dark shadow adds depth; keep it subtle so letters don’t look blurry.
  4. One highlight colour. Put the key word in a bright colour (yellow, red, cyan) and the rest in white.

How many words?

Three to five. Treat the thumbnail text like a road sign, not a caption. Examples:

  • “$20 vs $200”
  • “DON’T DO THIS”
  • “FIXED IN 2 MIN”

Before publishing, count your words and check your title with our title character counter so the two work together rather than repeating each other.

Test it properly

Upload your design to the thumbnail preview tool and switch between mobile, search and dark mode. If the words still read clearly there, the font is doing its job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any font I find online?

Only if its licence allows commercial use. Fonts from Google Fonts are free for commercial projects, which makes them a safe choice for a monetised channel.

Should I use the same font on every thumbnail?

Using one or two fonts consistently helps viewers recognise your videos. Change colour and layout from video to video instead.
