YouTube accepts custom thumbnails up to 2 MB, and they look best at 1280×720 in a 16:9 frame. Phone photos, screenshots and design exports rarely match both. This resizer turns any image into a correct YouTube thumbnail in a few seconds – right size, right shape, under the file limit – without uploading anything.

How to resize your thumbnail

  1. Click Choose an image and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP file of any size.
  2. Pick a fit mode: Fill & crop or Fit with background.
  3. Adjust the Crop position or Background colour until the preview looks right.
  4. Choose a Max file size: 2 MB (YouTube limit), 1 MB or 500 KB.
  5. Check the output size and quality, then click Download JPG.

The downloaded file is named after your original with -1280x720.jpg added, so you can find it easily.

Which fit mode to use

Your imageBest modeWhat happens
Landscape photo (4:3, e.g. 4032×3024)Fill & cropA strip is cut from the top and bottom; move the crop to keep faces
Vertical phone shot or Shorts frame (9:16)Fit with backgroundThe full image stays, with coloured bars on both sides

Crop position decides which part survives a crop: start (top or left), center, or end (bottom or right). For a face near the top of a portrait photo, choose start.

How the file-size limit works

The resizer tries the highest JPG quality first and steps down only as far as needed to fit your chosen limit. A typical 1280×720 thumbnail fits under 2 MB at very high quality, so most images lose nothing visible.

  • 2 MB – YouTube’s maximum. Use it for detailed photos.
  • 1 MB – almost always looks identical and uploads faster.
  • 500 KB – best for slow connections or when you upload many thumbnails; flat designs with large colour areas still look sharp.

Tips for a sharp result

  • Start large. Upscaling a 640×360 image to 1280×720 doubles every pixel and softens the image. Export from your editor at 1280×720 or bigger.
  • Keep text and faces away from the bottom-right corner. YouTube’s time badge covers it.
  • Leave a little margin. Text that touches the edges looks cramped on small screens.
  • Avoid saving a JPG again and again. Each re-save adds artefacts; resize from the original file.

After resizing

Run the new file through the thumbnail checker to confirm size, ratio and file limit, then see how it looks next to other videos with the thumbnail preview tool. Frequently asked questions

What size does the resizer create?

Always 1280×720 pixels in 16:9, saved as a JPG. That is the size YouTube recommends for custom thumbnails, and it looks sharp on every screen from phones to TVs.

How does it get the file under 2 MB?

It saves the image at the highest JPG quality that still fits under the limit you choose – 2 MB, 1 MB or 500 KB – and shows the final file size and quality before you download.

What is the difference between Fill & crop and Fit with background?

Fill & crop covers the whole 16:9 frame and cuts off the parts that do not fit; you choose which part to keep with Crop position. Fit with background keeps the entire image and fills the empty space with a colour you pick.

Is my image uploaded to your server?

No. Resizing and compression happen in your browser, so your image never leaves your device.

Can I use a small image?

Yes, but images smaller than 1280×720 are enlarged and will look softer. YouTube needs at least 640 pixels in width; for a crisp result start with an image at least 1280 pixels wide.

What happens to transparent PNG images?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour. Pick a colour that suits your design before downloading.
