YouTube Chapters Generator

Paste your timestamps in any format — get clean, valid chapters ready for your video description.

Any format works: 1:15 Title, Title - 1:15, (01:15) Title.

Your formatted chapters will appear here.

Chapters split a long video into named sections. Viewers see them as segments on the progress bar and can jump straight to the part they need, and Google can show them as key moments in search. The catch: YouTube only creates chapters when your timestamps follow strict rules. This generator turns rough notes into a clean, valid chapter list and checks every rule while you type.

How to use the chapters generator

    1. Paste or type your timestamps, one chapter per line. The order of time and title does not matter.
    2. Click Sort by time if you wrote them out of order, or Load example to see how it works.
    3. Watch the checklist – every rule turns green when your list is valid.
    4. Copy the formatted result and paste it into your video description in YouTube Studio.

    Messy input, clean output

You can paste timestamps in whatever style you noted them down:

    You typeYou get
    Intro 0:0000:00 Intro
(1:15) Why thumbnails matter01:15 Why thumbnails matter
    4:30 - My 3-step process04:30 My 3-step process
    [9:10] Results09:10 Results
1:02:45 Q&A1:02:45 Q&A (hours are added only where needed)

Brackets, dashes, pipes and colons around the time are removed, so the description stays tidy.

YouTube’s chapter rules (all checked automatically)

    RuleWhat breaks it
The first chapter starts at 0:00Starting with 0:05 Intro – YouTube then shows no chapters at all
At least 3 chaptersOnly an intro and one section
Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long3:00 Tip 1 followed by 3:06 Tip 2
Times go up in orderA later chapter listed above an earlier one
Every chapter has a titleA line with only a time

If one rule fails, YouTube silently ignores all of your timestamps – there is no error message in Studio, which is why a checker saves so much time.

How to write chapter titles people click

    • Lead with the topic, not the format: Exposure settings beats Part 2.
    • Keep it short – three to six words fit on a phone without being cut off.
    • Use the words people search for. If a chapter answers a common question, name it after the question.
    • Avoid a separate chapter for every sponsor read unless viewers want to skip it – they will, and that is fine.
    • Match the video. A chapter called Results that only teases results feels like clickbait and hurts trust.

Everything above the list stays as your normal description. You can also add links or hashtags below it.

Chapters still not showing? Check this

    • Wait a few minutes after saving – processing can take a short while, especially on new uploads.
    • Look for a stray timestamp higher up in the description. A time like 2:30 in your first sentence becomes the first chapter and breaks the 0:00 rule.
    • Check the video length. A very short video cannot fit three chapters of 10 seconds plus the content after them.
    • Automatic chapters may be showing instead if your list is invalid – fix the list and save again.

    Frequently asked questions

Why aren’t my chapters showing on YouTube?

Usually one rule is broken: the first timestamp is not 0:00, there are fewer than 3 chapters, a chapter is shorter than 10 seconds, or the times are out of order. Fix the list with the checker above, save the description and give YouTube a few minutes to process it.

Where do I paste the chapters?

In the video description in YouTube Studio (Content → the video → Details → Description). They can sit anywhere in the description, but placing them right after the first two lines makes them easy for viewers to find.

How do I write timestamps for a video longer than an hour?

Write chapters after the one-hour mark as hours:minutes:seconds, for example 1:05:30. Earlier chapters can stay as minutes:seconds (0:00, 12:40). The generator formats both correctly when it sees a chapter past one hour.

Can I add chapters to YouTube Shorts?

No. Chapters only work on regular long-form videos. Shorts ignore timestamps in the description.

    Do chapters help SEO?

They can. Google often shows key moments from chapters directly in search results, linking straight to that part of the video, and clear chapter titles help viewers find what they came for and keep watching.

    What are automatic chapters?

YouTube can create chapters by itself on some videos. Your own timestamps always replace them. If you do not want automatic chapters, turn off Allow automatic chapters in the video’s Show more settings in YouTube Studio.
