YouTube Shorts Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a youtube.com/shorts/… link to see and save the cover image YouTube shows for that Short.

Shorts have thumbnails too – they appear on your channel’s Shorts tab, in search results and when someone shares the link. This downloader saves the cover image of any public YouTube Short in every size YouTube stores, from a quick 320 × 180 preview up to HD 1280 × 720. Paste a /shorts/ link and download in seconds, on phone or computer.

How to download a Shorts thumbnail

  1. Open the Short in the YouTube app or on youtube.com.
  2. Tap Share → Copy link. The link contains /shorts/.
  3. Paste it into the box above and tap Get thumbnails.
  4. Tap Download on the size you want. On a phone, if the image opens in a new tab, long-press it and save it to your gallery.

What you get for a Short

Shorts use the same thumbnail system as normal videos, so you see the same list of sizes:

SizeResolutionNotes
HD1280 × 720Only if the Short was uploaded at 720p or higher
SD640 × 4804:3, may show bars
High480 × 360Always available
Medium320 × 180Always available
Small120 × 90Always available

Because the stored images are landscape, the vertical frame of a Short sits in the middle, usually with bars at the sides. If you need a true vertical 1080 × 1920 image of a moment in your own Short, export that frame from your original video file instead – it will be much sharper than any thumbnail.

Good reasons to save a Shorts thumbnail

  • Backing up your own covers before you change them, so you can compare results.
  • Reusing a cover for a matching long video, a community post or a newsletter.
  • Research. Collect the covers of top Shorts in your niche to see which colours, faces and words appear again and again.
  • Client and team work. Editors and social media managers often need the exact cover for reports.

Tips for Shorts covers that get noticed

The cover matters less in the swipe feed, where the video plays immediately, but it decides clicks on your channel page and in search.

  • Keep the subject in the centre. The edges are the first thing to be cropped when a vertical frame is shown in a landscape space.
  • Pick a frame with a clear face or a big, readable word.
  • Avoid motion blur. Pause on a sharp moment rather than the middle of a fast movement.
  • Match the hook. The cover and the first second of the Short should promise the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the downloaded Shorts thumbnail landscape and not vertical?

YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails on the same image server as regular videos, in the same landscape sizes (16:9 and 4:3). The vertical frame you see in the Shorts feed is cropped by the app, so the stored file is landscape with the vertical image in the middle.

Where do I find a Short’s link?

In the YouTube app, open the Short, tap Share and then Copy link. On a computer, the address bar shows a link like youtube.com/shorts/ followed by 11 characters.

How do I save the thumbnail on my phone?

Tap Download on the size you want. If the image opens in a new tab instead, long-press it and choose Save image (Android) or Save to Photos (iPhone).

Can I choose which frame becomes my Short’s thumbnail?

Yes. When you upload a Short in the YouTube app you can pick a frame from the video as the cover before publishing; depending on your account and app version you may also be able to change it later. Our guide on changing a Shorts thumbnail has the current steps.

Why does the thumbnail look grey or show the wrong image?

A grey placeholder usually means the Short is private, deleted or still processing. If you see a different picture, YouTube may still be serving an older cached thumbnail – try again later.

Can I reuse someone else’s Shorts thumbnail?

Thumbnails are protected by copyright like any other image. Saving one for reference or with permission is usually fine; posting it as your own is not. Read our guide on using YouTube thumbnails before you publish anything.
