Why Is the HD (maxresdefault) YouTube Thumbnail Missing?

Some videos have no 1280×720 thumbnail. Here's why maxresdefault.jpg returns a grey placeholder and which size to use instead.

You paste a link, and every size loads except the biggest one: the HD 1280 × 720 thumbnail, stored by YouTube as maxresdefault.jpg. Instead you get a small grey image with a play icon. Here’s what’s going on.

The grey placeholder is YouTube saying “this file doesn’t exist”

When you request a thumbnail size that YouTube never generated, its image server responds with a 120 × 90 grey placeholder (and a “404 Not Found” status). Our tool detects that placeholder and marks the size as Not available instead of letting you download a useless grey box.

Reason 1: the video wasn’t uploaded in HD

This is the most common cause. YouTube only creates maxresdefault.jpg when the uploaded video is 720p or higher. You’ll see this a lot with:

  • Videos uploaded before roughly 2010–2012, when many uploads were 360p or 480p
  • Screen recordings or phone clips exported at low resolution
  • Re-uploads of old TV or VHS footage

For these videos, the largest real thumbnail is usually the 640 × 480 (sddefault.jpg) or 480 × 360 (hqdefault.jpg) version.

Reason 2: the video is still processing

Right after upload, YouTube processes low resolutions first and HD later. Until the HD version finishes, the HD thumbnail may not exist. Wait a little and try again.

If every size shows as unavailable, check the link. Private and deleted videos often stop serving thumbnails, and a mistyped video ID points to nothing at all.

Which size should you use instead?

If HD is missing…UseWhy
You need the best qualitySD 640 × 480Largest remaining file; crop off the black bars
You need 16:9 without barsMedium 320 × 180Already 16:9, but small
It’s your own videoYour original design fileAlways sharper than any YouTube copy

To remove the black bars from the 640 × 480 file, crop it to 640 × 360 (cut 60 px from the top and bottom). That gives you a clean 16:9 image.

Quick check you can do yourself

Replace VIDEO_ID with the 11-character ID and open this in your browser:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg

If you see the grey placeholder, the HD file doesn’t exist for that video — no tool can download it.

Frequently asked questions

Will the HD thumbnail appear later?

If the video is still processing, yes — usually within minutes to a few hours. If the video was uploaded below 720p, it will never appear.

Can I upscale the SD thumbnail to 1280×720?

You can, with any image editor or AI upscaler, but it won't contain real extra detail. For your own videos, re-export the thumbnail from your original design file instead.
