  6. Naming chapters well

Chapters split your video into labelled sections on the progress bar. Viewers can jump to the part they need, and Google sometimes shows them as “key moments” in search results. Adding them takes a few minutes.

Step 1: Write your timestamps

Watch your video (or check your editing timeline) and note where each section begins:

0:00 Intro
1:15 Why thumbnails matter
4:30 My 3-step process
9:10 Results

Step 2: Check the four rules

Chapters only appear if your list follows YouTube’s rules:

  1. The first timestamp is 0:00.
  2. There are at least three timestamps.
  3. Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
  4. Timestamps are in ascending order.

Our chapters generator checks all four and fixes formatting from messy notes like Intro - 0:00 or (01:15) Title.

Step 3: Paste them into the description

In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Details, paste the list into the description and click Save. The chapters usually appear on the progress bar within minutes.

Automatic chapters

YouTube can create chapters automatically for some videos. You can turn this on or off under Details → Show more → Automatic chapters. Your own timestamps take priority over automatic ones, so writing them yourself gives you full control over the names.

Chapters not showing? Check these

ProblemFix
First timestamp is 0:01 or missingStart the list with 0:00
Only two timestampsAdd at least one more section
A section is shorter than 10 secondsMerge it with the next one
Times out of orderSort them (the generator has a button for this)
Text before the timestamp on each lineKeep each line as time title or title time without extra symbols

Naming chapters well

  • Use words people search for, like “How to export” rather than “Part 3”.
  • Keep names short – 2 to 5 words fit nicely on the progress bar.
  • Make them honest – a viewer who jumps to “Results” should see results.

For long videos, a chapter every two to five minutes is a comfortable rhythm. And if you only want to share one moment, a timestamp link is quicker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add chapters to an old video?

Yes. Edit the description of any video and add timestamps that follow the rules. Chapters appear once the change is saved.

Do chapters work on Shorts?

Chapters are designed for regular, longer videos. Shorts are too short for chapters to be useful.
