Shorts thumbnails are handled differently from regular videos, which confuses a lot of creators. This guide explains what you can control and how to get the best result.

Choosing a thumbnail when you upload

When you upload a Short with the YouTube mobile app:

  1. Record or select your vertical video and add any edits.
  2. On the final Add details screen, tap the pencil icon on the video preview.
  3. Slide along the timeline and pick the frame you want as the thumbnail.
  4. Tap Done, then upload.

Because the thumbnail comes from the video itself, plan for it while filming: hold a clear expression or show the finished result for a second, so there’s a sharp frame to choose.

Changing it after publishing

What you can edit after publishing depends on your app version and whether YouTube treats the video as a Short. In YouTube Studio, open the video under Content → Shorts and check whether a thumbnail option is shown. If it isn’t, the frame you chose at upload stays. YouTube has tested more Shorts thumbnail controls over time, so it’s worth checking the latest Studio app.

Why downloaded Shorts thumbnails are landscape

If you save a Shorts thumbnail with our Shorts thumbnail downloader, you’ll notice the image is horizontal, not 9:16. YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails in the same landscape sizes as regular videos:

SizeResolution
HD (only for HD uploads)1280 × 720
SD640 × 480
High480 × 360
Medium320 × 180

The vertical image you see in the app is cropped from that file when it’s displayed. So the centre of your frame is what survives the crop — keep faces and text in the middle.

Tips for Shorts frames that get clicks

  • Choose a frame with a face or a clear result, not a transition or blurry movement.
  • Avoid text at the top and bottom edges; the app covers them with buttons and captions.
  • Make the first second count. In the Shorts feed the video starts immediately, so the opening shot works as your real thumbnail.
  • Check the Shorts tab on your channel. That grid shows every thumbnail side by side; frames that look dark or empty stand out badly there.

If you need a true vertical image of a moment from your own Short (for example, for Instagram), export that frame from the original video file at 1080 × 1920. It will be much sharper than any thumbnail YouTube stores.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a custom image as a Shorts thumbnail?

YouTube's options for Shorts have changed several times. In the mobile app you can choose a frame from the video when you upload. Check the current app, because YouTube has been adding and testing new options.

Do Shorts thumbnails matter if the video plays automatically?

In the Shorts feed they matter less, but the thumbnail still appears on your channel's Shorts tab, in search and when Shorts are shown in the regular feed.
